New york city season
Creating new work every season is vital for Esse Aficionado. The emphasis on original choreography is complemented by the high standard of professionalism of each program. The company strives to think differently and be innovative by exploring a new movement vocabulary and avenues in process. Esse Aficionado’s essential service to the community is to provoke reaction, influence expression, and stimulate life - all through movement. At least once a year, typically in fall, Esse Aficionado self produces a 4-evening program of new choreography by the founders of the company. The venue will vary depending on availability and the geographic area served is mostly the borough of Manhattan. Esse Aficionado has performed in Brooklyn and the company has interest in eventually presenting in all five boroughs of New York City. This program serves the dancers with an opportunity to perform and the collaborators (visual artists, musicians, inventors, actors, and designers) with a chance for their own work to be implemented into the realm of dance. In addition to the production team, the company enlists graphic designers to assists with marketing materials and video artists to videotape/edit performances. The Esse Aficionado New York City season is currently the principal element that reveals the company’s identity to the public.
esse outdoors - intersection
Since 2000, Esse Aficionado has been performing an ongoing site specific series, Intersection, at various locations in New York City. Intersection was created to add fun and humor to pedestrian’s every day routine in New York City. The work involves a team of dancers performing minimal movement during each red light at strategically chosen intersections throughout town. Intersection is performed with different themes and costumes but the concept of hitting each red light in an intersection remains the same. Locations and times are chosen based on the volume of pedestrians and car traffic. Themes chosen are based on the character of the neighborhood, the season, any events occurring (i.e. Gay Pride Parade), and the time of day. The latest intersection to experience this series was Fifth Avenue and 82nd Street in front of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The theme was Jackie O and the makeshift costumes reflected the Upper East Side chic of the illustrious former first lady. The public reaction and interaction of this work breaks the monotony of the day, a great service to the life of any New Yorker. The curious attention and questions Esse Aficionado receives from pedestrians who witness this work fulfills its mission of presenting thought provoking art.
