Maki Morinoue was born in Fujisawa, Japan and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. Her early dance training began with the study of Cecchetti and Vaganova ballet techniques and she performed as a soloist in many of the ballet classics. In 1995, Ms. Morinoue continued her dance training at the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. While in college, she guest performed with the Donna Uchizono Dance Company in New York City. In 1999, Ms. Morinoue graduated with a BFA in Dance and received the Dance Faculty Performance Award. One year later, she became a co-founder of Esse Aficionado. Maki uses a combination of improvisation, music and visual concepts to carve the abstract landscapes in her environments through her choreography. Maki relocated to Seattle, Washington in 2004 and founded MiKiJio Arts, an art gallery space in Pioneer Square. Ms. Morinoue is currently a Seattle-based choreographer and continues to be a vital part of Esse Aficionado. Maki is a 2007 Artist Trust recipient.
